CARLISLE, Pa. — Today we continue to highlight the unique experiences of our Dickinson student-athletes during the summer with our Red Devil Check-In series by seeing what women's basketball rising senior Gabby Smelcer is up to.
Summer check-in
Where are you working or interning this summer?
Medical assistant for internal medicine physician, Dr. Van Lomis, in Rosedale, Maryland.
What are your day-to-day responsibilities in this position?
I take patient's vitals, do EKGs, and administer vaccines and shots. I also manage patient phone calls by assessing concerns and documenting symptoms. I communicate closely with Dr. Lomis and follow up with patients regarding diagnostic results, treatment plans, medications, and specialist referrals.
This opportunity was exciting because it offers hands-on patient experience, which is my first step to becoming a physician assistant. Working in primary care has exposed me to a wide range of experiences, including navigating insurance companies and advocating for patients to obtain treatment approvals, caring for patients with a variety of medical conditions and treatment plans, and developing the ability to interact with patients with compassion and empathy.
How has your athletics career prepared you for this role?
Being a student-athlete has equipped me with the skills to excel in medicine. I thrive in a team environment, collaborating with other MAs and learning from Dr. Lomis. Just like on the basketball court, I have learned to adapt quickly, stay composed, and contribute to a high-volume practice.
Looking forward to this season, what are you most excited about?
I am most excited to kick off my senior season by traveling to Ireland for a tournament in August! I’m grateful for such a close-knit, hardworking team.
Come back next Tuesday for our next check-in as we will hear from women's volleyball rising junior Emery Fishbach.
