As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, the milestone is prompting a period of national reflection. Members 1st Federal Credit Union — a Pennsylvania-based institution with more than 630,000 members — is using this moment to examine its own history.
Founded in 1950, the credit union’s origins are firmly rooted in the service-oriented environment of post-World War II America.
“Our beginnings were actually on a military base, 76 years ago, and it’s pretty incredible when you think about it because nine people put money into a pot to lend each other money for appliances during the war,” said Mike Wilson, president and CEO of Members 1st.
“We started by supporting those who have put service above self,” Wilson said. “That’s definitely a value that we will always retain and something special to reflect on as we are getting ready to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.”

A corporate culture of “we”
Over three quarters of a century, Members 1st has grown into an organization that manages nearly $9 billion in 59 branches across Pennsylvania. Members 1st will be opening a new branch in Forks Township at the end of 2026 and plans to launch an additional 5 branches in 2027. The member-owned institution has scaled its operations to include small business lending and digital banking, while working to ensure that size does not come at the cost of service.
Members 1st associates work tirelessly to deliver financial solutions tailored to each member’s unique needs. To maintain that focus, the organization has formalized what Wilson calls a “culture of we.”
“‘We’re being far more impactful than any individual ‘me,’” Wilson said.
This collective mindset is also reflected in the credit union’s fundamental business model. As a member-owned entity, there are no for-profit shareholders pulling quarterly earnings from the business. Consequently, profits are reinvested into the institution, which allows for more competitive rates on loans and deposit products.

Growing with communities
Members 1st’s growth into a 12-county footprint in Pennsylvania — with each branch proudly flying an American flag, a Members 1st flag and a POW/MIA flag in perpetuity — has been paired with a deliberate strategy of grassroots reinvestment. In 2025, the organization contributed nearly $1 million to charitable causes across its network.
Much of this work focuses on the military community that birthed the organization. In recent years, Members 1st has become a critical partner to Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania, a local nonprofit that provides housing, therapy and workforce training for unhoused veterans.
“It’s not only because they do just such amazing work, but that again keeps us true to our roots and how we got started, and those that we are meant to help in terms of keeping service above self,” Wilson said.
Beyond veterans’ services, the organization supports families dealing with childhood illness through A Week Away, an organization that provides respite care for parents managing grueling treatment schedules.
As Members 1st prepares for further expansion, including entry into the Maryland market, Wilson said that America’s 250th anniversary offers a chance to double down on these core values.
“What started out as a very incredible organic means of being able to help people has now grown into something pretty spectacular and special,” Wilson said. “We have stood the test of time while keeping our principles the same."
