Red Devil summer check-in: Claire Kingsbury
Today we continue to highlight the unique experiences of Dickinson student-athletes during the summer with our Red Devil Check-In series by connecting with rising women's golf student-athlete Claire Kingsbury.
Where are you working or interning this summer?
I worked at a historic site and fort called Brunswick Town Fort Anderson through the University of North Carolina at Wilmington's field school and summer class.
What were your day-to-day responsibilities in this position?
On Mondays, as a group, we would go to the campus lab and work for about four hours, and the other four days of the week we were at the site from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. We dug 5-by-5 units at the site and excavated the area, which included shoveling, troweling, brushing, measuring, mapping, bagging, labeling, and working together with the others in the class.

There was not a specific role anyone had. Sometimes you were measuring, or mapping, or troweling. You just did whatever needed to be done in the moment and whatever direction the teacher wanted us to go in. The teacher would also switch people in groups so we could meet and work together with others.
What made this experience appealing to you?
This experience was appealing to me because I got to learn how to properly excavate in the archaeological field. I loved discovering artifacts, doing hard work, and meeting all kinds of different people of different ages and backgrounds. We all got along well and got close throughout the program.
How does this experience relate to your career or life aspirations?
This experience is exactly what I am hoping to do in my future career: become an archaeologist. I was looking to personally expand my knowledge of archaeology and its procedures and to make sure that doing what I was doing was something I wanted to do as a career.
How has your athletics career prepared you for this role?
My athletics career prepared me for this role because it is a very laborious career. It takes a lot of physical labor, work ethic, and critical thinking. In golf it is physical and requires a strong mental game and work ethic.
What are you looking forward to in the upcoming year for your sport?
I am looking forward to improving my personal golf game but also witnessing my teammates' improvements, getting to know the new players on the team, and being able to play the sport I love with great friends.
Is there anything else you are looking forward to this summer outside of this experience?
I am currently on a trip in Alaska and have really looked forward to all the experiences to be had. I am also looking forward to working at a summer camp I worked at last year, to see friends and make new ones.
