This summer, I had the opportunity to intern at Gustiamo, an Italian importing company specializing in luxury Italian food products from various regions of Italy. Gustiamo is located in the Bronx, New York.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Each day, I am responsible for organizing and handling incoming and outgoing orders. I aid logistics for both Gustiamo website and Amazon orders.
What made this experience appealing
I was drawn to this experience initially as my father worked in the Italian importing industry, specializing in coffee. After finding my love for the language through the Italian classes that I have taken at Dickinson, I was intrigued to hear that this internship experience would offer me the opportunity to be surrounded by native Italians, as well as their language, culture and food.
This experience has allowed me to understand and see firsthand how an Italian importing company is managed. In my future career, I would like to work in sales and marketing for an Italian importing company. Through this experience, I was looking to meet new people, learn about their experience in the industry, and strengthen my Italian language and cultural knowledge, all of which I am happy to say that I have achieved.
How athletics prepared her for the role
My career in swimming has taught me that hard work pays off. If you put in the work in the pool, that hard work will show up at the meet. As a mid-distance to distance swimmer, I am often reminded that if you are working hard, you will be uncomfortable, but it will pay off. I applied this to my internship each day, putting in the work and now I could not be happier with how I am leaving.
Looking ahead to the season
I am most excited to spend time with my teammates again. We have some amazing traditions for team bonding, including going apple picking, hiking and go-carting. I am also excited for our training trip. Last year's trip was an unforgettable experience with so many great memories and I can’t wait to experience it again!
Plans for the rest of the summer
This summer I am going to the Cape with my family for two weeks. I am excited to get some relaxation and spend time with my family.
