Devils edge Spartans in tightly contested nonconference match

YORK, Pa. - The Dickinson volleyball team got a combined 27 kills from the pair of Jessica Currie and Mallie Thomas to help the Red and White power past the host York College of Pennsylvania by a final of 3-1 on Tuesday night at Wolf Gymnasium.

First set

• It was all Spartans early as they jumped out to a 9-2 lead.
• Dickinson then responded with ten straight on kills from Katie Arcara, Caroline Cusson and Lora Flynn, making it 12-9.
• The group of Saniya Esters, Liz Kerin, Tiffani King, Shae Ramberger and Hannah Runyard helped the home side get back ahead by a slim 16-15 margin.
• Three kills put away by Currie and solos for Arcara and Thomas allowed DC to reclaim the lead at 22-17.
• The set of runs continued with YCP earning eight of the ensuing ten points, with a kill from Ramberger putting the home side on the cusp of the set (25-24).
• However, a Thomas kill and an ace from Cusson powered the Devils to the 27-25 win.

Second set

• The quartet of Arcara, Currie, Cusson and Thomas got the visitors out to a 6-5 edge.
• After an error by DC and a kill for Ramberger made it 9-8 home side, Kylie Schner and Norah Oppenheim joined Currie in recording kills to take a 14-11 lead.
• Things went back and forth over the next few points, with the Spartans pulling even at 18-18, before the trio of Gracie Plunkert, Esters and Runyard ended the frame on an 8-3 push, taking it 25-21.

Third set

• Kills for Currie and Cusson, coupled with a joint block between Emery Fishbach and Thomas, helped the sides share the first ten points.
• Kills from Esters then bookended a 5-1 run, giving the hosts a 10-6 advantage.
• Three consecutive miscues by the Spartans set the stage for kills by Cusson, Oppenheim and Thomas to make it 18-13 Dickinson.
• York did not go down without a fight, though, as Katelyn Adams and Kerin each tallied two kills to pull within 20-18, but a kill each from Oppenheim, Schner and Thomas, along with a combination block for Cusson and Oppenheim, closed out a 25-20 win.

Fourth set

• Once again things were tight early as the score was 5-5, before aces by Avery Butcher and Thomas made it 10-6 guests.
• A kill for Kerin sparked a 7-2 push for the Spartans, which ended on a kill by Adams to bring the hosts to a 13-12 edge.
• Two Thomas aces and kills put down by Fishbach and Oppenheim moved the Devils three points from the match at 22-17.
• Three DC miscues and a score for Kerin cut the margin to 24-21, but Oppenheim deposited the match-winning kill (25-21).
