NEW CASTLE – UPMC is expanding access to imaging services for residents of Mercer and Lawrence counties with the addition of a new cardiac CT scanner and a new wide-bore MRI.
These will be installed at UPMC’s Jameson campus in New Castle, and will expand the care options available to patients in the Shenango Valley and the New Castle area.
The new computed tomography (CT) scanner will use a series of X-ray images and computer technology to create detailed pictures of organs, blood vessels and other structures inside the body.
The technology images and identifies heart disease and evaluates potential blockages without using invasive procedures.
Previously, patients had to travel outside of the region to receive this type of testing.
“Bringing this capability to UPMC Jameson means patients can receive sophisticated cardiac imaging locally while benefitting from the expertise of the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute located in New Castle,” said Dr. Uzair Ashraf.
Meanwhile, the new wide-bore MRI improves the hospital’s cancer diagnostic capabilities. The non-invasive technology uses a magnetic field and radio waves to take pictures of the inside of the body.
The new system expands specialized imaging services available locally, including breast MRI and prostate MRI.
