UPMC Jameson Hospital has two new pieces of technology to help its departments, including its Heart and Vascular Institute.
The $7 million investment includes a new CT scanner and a wide-bore MRI machine, which replaces previously outdated equipment.
There are two CT scanners at Jameson Hospital and one at the UPMC Jameson College Fields MRI and Diagnostic Imaging Center on Enclave Drive, while there is an MRI machine each at both locations.
The CT scanner will allow for more cardiac screenings with clearer, more detailed images. The MRI machine will decrease scan times and increase data to help move patients more efficiently through evaluation, diagnosis and treatment planning.
UPMC Jameson and Horizon President Dave Patton and cardiologist Dr. Uzair Ashraf said these machines allow residents in Lawrence and Mercer counties to receive high-quality care close to home, rather than having to travel to Pittsburgh.
"We can do it here and we will do it here," Ashraf said.
Ashraf said the CT scanner, in particular, allows staff members to see every individual artery and blood vessel in the heart to check for heart disease, allowing them to come up with individual treatment plans for patients.
"It gives them a new cardiac tool," Ashraf said.
