Carlisle High School grad Jeff Lebo resigned Wednesday as head coach at East Carolina University.

Lebo, a 1985 Carlisle grad, and ECU athletics director Jeff Compher announced the news during a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

"After 36 years of playing and coaching and the sacrifices we have made as a family, it was time for me to make a change and pivot to a new chapter in my life," Lebo told Raleigh radio station WRAL. "Sometimes, there comes a time where you want to focus a little more in areas that you might have fallen short in the last 36 years. We thought it would be in everyone's best interest for me to step down."

The 51-year-old Lebo posted a 116-124 record at ECU, where he’d been the Pirates head coach since 2010. The Pirates never made an NCAA tournament appearance during his tenure. Lebo led the Pirates to an 18-16 record in his first season, the program’s first winning season since 1993.

In 2012-13, he led the Pirates to a 23-12 record and the College Insider Tournament championship.

Assistant coach Michael Perry has accepted the role as interim head coach according to Compher.

The Pirates have finished with a losing record in each of the previous three seasons and haven't taken part in a postseason tournament since the 2014 Tournament — an event they won the year before. They've made the NCAA Tournament only twice — and not since 1993.

East Carolina also has lost at home this season to Central Connecticut State by 11 points and to Radford, and by 14 points at Rutgers.

Lebo's career record of 327-278 also includes stints at Tennessee Tech, Chattanooga and Auburn.

He played for Dean Smith at UNC in the late 1980s, scoring 1,567 points during his career and winning two Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season titles to go with one ACC Tournament championship.
