Trinity will have a tough PIAA Class 2A first round opponent in WPIAL champ Mars.

PIAA Class 2A First Round

Tuesday, at North Allegheny HS, 6:30

3-4 Trinity: District 3 fourth-place finisher (14-7, Mid-Penn Commonwealth)

7-1 Mars: District 7 champion (18-3)

Next round: Winner of 3-1 Hershey vs. 7-3 Quaker Valley, at Elizabethtown HS, 7

Notes: As lacrosse has spread westward across the state, Mars has developed into one of the WPIAL’s top programs of late, especially in Class 2A. The Fightin’ Planets won their fourth-straight title on Friday — even after losing a whopping 18 seniors to graduation coming into the season — and made it all the way to the PIAA semifinals last season. The Shamrocks were bested in the first round by Strath Haven.

Fightin’ Planets top player: Coached by Bob Marcoux, Mars’ Mike Doyle scored more than 100 goals this season and is the biggest threat on attack. He and linemate Chris Sicher make a great one-two punch that will challenge the Shamrocks. A feed from Doyle set up Sicher for the overtime goal against Hampton 9-8 for the WPIAL championship.

Shamrocks top players: Coached by Dave Heisey, Trinity has a multitude of goal-scorers to choose from. Drew Godfrey racked up 79 goals so far this season and seven during the District 3 tournament. Danny Scott (nine goals in districts) and Croix Teter (five goals) are also talented scoring options. As for the netminder, Nate Stauffer led the team with 48 postseason saves.
