Beck Zimmerman In My Words

This week marked the beginning and the end of our postseason run. Despite being the No. 2 seed, our path to the district finals was difficult as we faced strong teams in both games.

For the first round we played Conestoga Valley, or as we call them, the inferior CV. Knowing that it was a win-or-go-home situation, nerves were at an all-time high. We started the game shakily and by halftime it was 0-0. We recovered quickly to start the second half, though, scoring only 45 seconds after the whistle. We kept our momentum through the rest of the half, winning tackles and completing passes. Then, with about 30 minutes left, I scored a header on a corner kick to make it 2-0. Being my first goal of the season, it gave our team the boost of energy we needed to finish the game. The game ended 2-0 and we had made it past the first round.

Our next opponent was Wilson, a team we knew would give us one of the toughest games of the season. Despite back-and-forth action, Wilson struck first, scoring with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. However, rather than hang our heads, we rallied back, knocking in two goals before the half to give us a 2-1 lead. Just like the first half, the second half was back-and-forth with neither team being able to maintain the upper hand. Regulation ended with the score 3-3; it was time for overtime.

Despite being exhausted, both teams continued to fight hard, knowing that giving up a goal meant the season being over. After 30 minutes of overtime, the game was still tied, so it was time for penalty kicks. Having practiced penalties all season, we had confidence in our kickers. However, three out of our first four kickers mishit their shot and Wilson capitalized, making all four of theirs.

As a senior, this was my last game for Cumberland Valley and potentially my last ever competitive game of soccer. Overall, my senior season was more than I could have ever asked for, with teammates and memories I will never forget. It was a heartbreaking way to go out, but I could not be more proud of the fight that we showed all season long.
