As a freshman, one of the seniors told us, “This is the farthest this team will get for a long time.” We had just lost in the first round of districts. I thought he must be mistaken. We still have Ian Capp next year. There is no way we won’t make districts again, I thought to myself.
That following year, we missed districts by suffering a loss to Palmyra. I began to think that there must be some truth to what I heard my freshman year.
Last season, junior year, I was haunted by his words from two years earlier. We ended a rough season with a record to prove it: 3-12. It was like an echo, we weren’t going to win a district game before my graduation. Coming into our senior year, I was motivated by proving the echo and that teammate wrong. We will be better than imagined and we will win a district game.
My teammates agree. We will prove to be a force to be reckoned with this year. We will prove the naysayers wrong and so far we have. Obviously there is a lot of volleyball left to play before we can say for certain, but we are definitely on the right track. I can’t be more proud of the team we have become.
