Carolyn Bolden In My Words

For Cumberland Valley Swimming and Diving, the 2019 Mid-Penn Championships meet was a huge success.

Races were won, medals were earned, records were shattered and personal bests were achieved. The CV men’s team came in second overall and the CV ladies came in third. These are just some of the awesome moments that happened for our team over the weekend.

If you read any other recap about Mid-Penn Swimming Championships, you will read about these highlights and more; the event winners, the fast times and maybe even a quote or two from the swimmers who won the close races.

But what you won’t read about is the team dynamic that is so important at this meet. Our team is together, at our home pool, suited and tapered, and ready to swim fast. Whether it’s the 50 or 500 yard freestyle, our entire team is on their feet, waving and cheering for our swimmers in the water.

When our swimmers touch the wall, our team looks to the scoreboard and cheers. Our swimmers haven’t seen the times yet, but we know they’ll be excited; they just did their best time. Having 40 of your best friends cheer you on to reach your goal time can only be described with one word: amazing.

When our swimmers stand on the podium, you can see the medal around their neck and the smile on their face, but what you can’t see is what it took to get there. You can’t see the hours of hard work at practice that it took for that swimmer to reach the podium. It is what they do in the dark that puts them in the light.

After four years of swimming at the Mid-Penn meet, I’m sad that this was my last. I’ve made some awesome memories, and I’ve learned that sometimes, the things you can’t always see are the most important.
