Noah Affolder Team USA

Carlisle’s Noah Affolder had a goal this season of making Team USA. The senior accomplished that after being selected to the six-person junior team that will run in Scotland in January.

Carlisle senior Noah Affolder has been selected to represent Team USA in the Great Edinburgh XC Challenge on Jan. 7 in Scotland.

The United States junior team was selected based on performances in the Foot Locker, Nike and NCAA meets. Six total will represent the USA. He first announced his selection on Twitter on Dec. 13.

"When I first decided I wanted to try and make the team I emailed the selection committee sharing my interest and it really came down to my performance at Foot Locker," Affolder said through message on Twitter. "With a strong finish at nationals I was feeling pretty confident about making the team, but like most of those on the team, it was a little sketchy a few days before we were notified. When I found out I made the team I was thrilled — I have always wanted to represent our country and to be able to do that in high school means a lot!

"When the gear showed up at my house and I saw the USA jersey I was humbled and honored to know that I am going represent the greatest country."

Affolder, who transferred this summer from upstate New York and is a Syracuse commit, enters international competition fresh off of a sixth-place finish at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships (a time of 15:10.3) in San Diego.

He also won the PIAA Class 3A title last month, the first in Thundering Herd history, with a time of 15:33.

“(If I had a redo) I think getting up with that front pack,” Affolder said earlier this month about the Foot Locker championship race. “I think I was a little timid to push the pace, so I didn’t have the same result as last year.”

He also won District 3 and Mid-Penn individual championships this fall.

Affolder will join Finn Gessner, Seth Hirsch, Conor Lundy, Kenny Vasbinder and Sam Worley, according to

Noah and his brother, Sam, helped Carlisle earn its best finish at states in program history with a silver medal — its 118 points ranked second behind Council Rock North’s 76 — at the PIAA Class 3A Cross Country Championships.

Both brothers also helped Carlisle crush the competition at the District 3 Class 3A Cross Country Championships where the team placed three in the top six and four in the top 25 to finish with 106 points and gold.

Sam Affolder, a sophomore, ran a time of 16:12.6 to claim 40th in the Foot Locker National Championships.
