NEW HOLLAND — Sun Valley scored the first 11 points of the fourth quarter to cap a 16-2 run as the District 1 champ Vanguards pulled away to ended Northern’s season with a 61-53 loss in the PIAA Class 5A second round Tuesday night at Garden Spot High School.
“I think we got in a little bit of foul trouble, they were going to the line late in the third, early in the fourth quarter, making free throws,” Polar Bears coach Kyle McGill said.
“That’s tough on us. We changed our rotation a little bit. We had some really good looks going coming down the stretch when we needed them, got a couple steals, ball just didn’t fall in at that last part.”
Ryan McGill paced Northern with 19 points — 12 coming in the first half, which finished with the senior draining a buzzer-beating 3-pointer for a 31-30 Polar Bear lead. Eddie Ensor added 10 points as Northern ended its season at 23-6.
Vinny DeAngelo scored a game-high 26 points for the Vanguards (21-7), who advance to face District 2 champ Abington Heights in the quarterfinals Friday. Dominic Valente hit three of his four 3-pointers in first quarter for 13 points, while Marvin Freeman chipped in 10 points.
A Dan Leitholf 3-pointer gave Northern a 39-36 lead in the third before Sun Valley posted six of the quarter’s last seven points — Isaac Kennon’s buzzer-beater giving the Vanguards a 41-40 edge.
Sun Valley extended the lead to 52-41 after two DeAngelo free throws with 3:42 remaining. Northern finally broke through in the fourth on an Ensor triple to make it 52-44.
The Polar Bears pulled as close as four at 54-50 with 1:19 left after a Ryan McGill free throw, but the Vanguards scored the next four points to go up eight.
