Zach Ihnat

Mechanicsburg's Zach Ihnat ends his high school career as the Wildcats' only 100-goal scorer and their all-time leading scorer.

Throughout the 2018-19 high school sports season, we will name a weekly Sentinel Athlete of the Week every week highlighting the on-field performances of some of the area’s best high school competitors.

This week’s athlete is Mechanicsburg lacrosse player Zach Ihnat.

The senior scored his 100th goal a few weeks ago and that milestone made him the first 100-goal scorer the Wildcats have ever had. He ends his high school career with 115 goals, 53 assists and Mechanicsburg lacrosse’s all-time leading scorer.

Q: You hit the 100 goal mark a few weeks back. How did it feel to hit that milestone?

A: It was a relief because it was my goal all season to hit it, so when it finally happened I know I accomplished something most people don’t.

Q: Did you do anything to celebrate after?

A: Not really. I got the ball I scored with, which is something I will be able to keep as a memory.

Q: You’re also the only 100-goal scorer for Mechanicsburg and their all-time leading scorer. Knowing that, what does it mean to you?

A: I had no clue that I was ever going to be the leading scorer for my school and it means a lot to me, but I’m more excited to see who will be able to pass me in the future as the program improves and grows.

Q: What’s next for you and your lacrosse career?

A: Next year I will be attending James Madison University and plan to play club lacrosse there.

Q: Are you rooting for anyone in the Stanley Cup Finals? Why?

A: I’m a Penguins fan, so I’m not really rooting for anyone, but if I could give it to anyone it would be the Hurricanes because I like the celebrations they do after wins.

Q: Do you have any hobbies outside of lacrosse?

A: I like being in nature, such as hiking and hammocking with my friends.

Q: If you could have any job in the world, what would it be and why?

A: I would want to be an entrepreneur because I always liked the idea of having something that I can call mine and I could be my own boss.

Q: Who inspires you the most in life?

A: My parents because they always do whatever they can to make sure that my brother and I are always happy, and they are very supportive in whatever we want to do.
