Dear Editor:

Each year United Way asks the community to generously support the nonprofit network that serves its community. Thanks to United Way contributions, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region can create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is recognized as an evidence-based program that meets or exceeds standards for mentoring impact. Youth that have a positive mentor are less likely to use drugs and alcohol, hit another individual or become involved with the juvenile justice system. Mentored youth are more likely to stay in school, develop a positive attitude, build self confidence and graduate from high school. Your contribution to United Way has made a difference in the life of a child and will result in a better community for us all.

A Cumberland County match which has been together five years recently told BBBS about their relationship. Big Sister Maria said, “being able to be there for her in those important moments, like when her dad [had] some medical issues, I was able to be a supportive person in her life.” Little Sister Chloe echoed her Big Sisters words, saying she would support her Big Sister “in anything she does,” and what’s made an impact for her is “always being by [Maria’s] side.”

On behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters, thank you for your generosity and thank you United Way of Carlisle and Cumberland County for advocating on behalf of the network of nonprofit services that act as a safety net for individuals in our community.

Executive Director Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region
