Midterm elections are around the corner. We complain about our U.S. Congress; 17 percent of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing (Gallup survey conducted Aug. 1-12, 2018). If this is true, why do we continue to elect the same politicians for office election after election?
In general, these same career politicians tell us they are fighting for us, using buzz words, or ideas that touch us emotionally. They become “career” politicians and make rules so that it is easy to reward themselves with generous benefits, guaranteed pay increases and a lifetime pension. They don’t do anything about reducing pay, perks, limiting the size of the legislature or passing term limits.
Every year for the last five years, I have assisted soldiers (yes, they pay taxes too), military retirees, widows and widowers do their income taxes. With the tax reduction for tax year 2018, many will see some relief. One politician calls it “crumbs.” However, this same politician has been in office for over 30 years and is very, very rich. In those 30 years, did this politician ever participate in getting us taxpayers some tax relief? The answer is no.
Please don’t be dumbed down by media sound bites. I humbly request that all voters take a hard look at who is running again and again and consider voting these career politicians out of office. We need fresh faces and people who will truly represent us.
