I served as Cumberland County’s Chief Public Defender from 1976 until 2011. My office was an opponent of the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office for all the time that Skip Ebert was a top Assistant District Attorney to District Attorney J. Michael Eakin, and all the time that Skip Ebert was the elected district attorney before he was elected to the bench in 2005 by defeating me in the primary election that year. I tried many cases with Skip Ebert on the other side, including multiple death penalty cases.
I have had a very good platform to see Skip Ebert’s performance as a district attorney. I have seen the initiatives he has implemented in Cumberland County that have made our county the envy of many counties regarding the operation of our criminal justice system. These initiatives included early and open discovery practices, widespread use of ARD, live-scan fingerprinting with very quick identifications, development of a robust county forensic lab. I have also seen Skip’s positive involvement with problem-solving courts.
I always admired Skip’s ability to build a team of prosecutors and investigators. His assistants were always smart and effective, and the morale of his office was high.
In my opinion Skip Ebert is the best district attorney Cumberland County has ever had, and one of the best district attorneys that any county in Pennsylvania has ever had. There should be no doubt as to who to choose for Cumberland County District Attorney this year. It is Skip Ebert.
