Throughout my campaign for State Representative people have asked me why I decided to run as a Democrat in the 92nd Legislative District. “You’re brave!” they’d say. Or, “Don’t you know who lives here?” The truth is, I do know who lives here. Kind people who care about their kids and communities.
I’m running for State Representative for many reasons, chief among them making Pennsylvania a better place to live, work and raise a family. Many voters I’ve talked to are unaware of the impact state government has on their lives. The news often focuses on what happens in D.C. We need to spend more time focusing on what happens in Harrisburg.
How can we make Pennsylvania work for all of us? We create a system of affordable and accessible healthcare. We support public education and find ways to make college, technical schools, and child care affordable. We fight systemic and institutional poverty. We protect social programs that allow us to get back on our feet after hardship. We legalize and tax marijuana. We invest in infrastructure and clean energy. We spend more time and money on education and opportunities than on prisons. We fix our tax system so that it is fair to the working people of this state, rather than a system full of loopholes for corporations and the ultra-rich. We need to address the many factors contributing to the epidemic of gun violence.
These are the paths we must take if we are to create the Pennsylvania we deserve. I struggle to understand the hate that permeates politics, but can’t help but think that if our needs were met, we’d have a lot more love in our hearts.
I hope you will consider a vote for me as you head to the polls on Nov. 6.
