My name is Kate McGraw, Independent candidate for state representative for the 92nd Legislative District, serving parts of York and Cumberland counties.
Born and raised in Monroe Township, like all of my siblings, I started working at an early age harvesting vegetables and running the till at local farm markets. I subsequently earned three college degrees while working as an independent proprietor of a successful art studio. Throughout my travels to exhibit my artwork worldwide, a piece of my heart remained tied to Monroe Township. When circumstances allowed for my husband and me to move back home, we happily returned.
I come from a family of farmers and small business owners. My father’s family owned a hotel and raised sheep, and my mother grew up on a dairy farm established by my great-grandmother who raised 12 children. My grandfather tended a small herd of dairy cattle; and it was there at the kitchen table that my family discussed the economic difficulties of running a farm.
My grandparents were the models for hard work, and passed those values onto their kin. They knew the value of the dollar and how to wield limited resources. Poor health and advancing age was the final straw for our family farm. The day the truck drove away with our dairy herd is etched in my memory.
Our cherished farmland demands our protection so that future generations can experience the wondrous way of life a productive farming culture provides. Profitable small-scale farming has a future here. I will introduce revenue-generating ideas in Harrisburg, and fight to bring our farming past into our farming future, because our traditions, our land and our families matter.
You can count on me to be your trusted advocate in Harrisburg to fight the good fight for our shared values.
