As the elected tax collector for Silver Spring Township I am writing to ask the voters of the township to vote for me on May 16.
Over the years I have continued to upgrade the tax office and offer services to help taxpayers. I have become a State Qualified Tax Collector by completing testing and attending annual classes to keep up with any pertinent changes. Because of my knowledge and experience I would like to also respond to some campaign issues concerning possible upgrades in the tax office.
One of these issues being suggested is the acceptance of credit card payments. I have been trying to get approval for credit card payments for a number of years. Unfortunately, between the additional cost to the taxpayer in the form of a processing fee and the possible liability of charge-backs that could occur after the yearly settlement, this has not come to fruition. I am hopeful that these constraints may someday be resolved.
My opponent has said that he would implement a procedure for installment payments. According to the county, this cannot be done as there is no way to remit those partial payments to the taxing districts. Since there is a strict remittance schedule in place, those payments cannot be held in the tax office.
The school district has its own resolution concerning installment payments. This approved schedule must be followed by the tax payer and the tax collector. The tax collector has no authority to override these regulations.
As a Pennsylvania Qualified Tax Collector I possess the knowledge of tax collection laws. I hope that I can count on your continued support.
