HS SPORTS BLOG: Softball playoffs almost upon us

Cumberland Valley's catcher, Raeann Buskey, makes the out at home plate against State College's #21, Brenna Adams, in third inning of their game on Thursday evening at Cumberland Valley High School.

Wednesday marks the last day softball teams can play games they want to count toward their District 3 power rating. For some teams, that date can't get here soon enough. For others, they'd like another week to pad their resume. But whichever side of the fence they sit, Wednesday is it.

The postseason will kick off Thursday with the Mid-Penn tournament held at Hershey High School. Susquenita is the lone Sentinel-area squad with a spot locked up, having gone undefeated through the Capital. However, Cumberland Valley has a shot to sneak in with some help from Mifflin County in the Commonwealth spot.

Then, it's District 3 tournament time. The opening round kicks off Tuesday. Just a week ago, it was looking like the Sentinel area would send six schools. But with the latest release which includes Monday's games, we now have eight teams lined up to make the postseason.

The biggest standout has to be Red Land, which after three wins over the week jumped six spots to the 16th and final postseason spot.

Northern was the other school to enter the playoff field, climbing from 18 to 15 thanks to a 2-0 week.

Most teams can expect to stay put with two days of games remaining, but there is some room for a little bit of movement, depending on a few results.

Here's a look at how all the Sentinel-area squads stack up in the District 3 power ratings, as reported through Monday's games:
