What is the status of the hotel on Westminster Drive in South Middleton Township?

The Microtel Inn on Westminster Drive is scheduled to open Nov. 1, according to the developer.

The 83-room, three-story hotel is on 5 acres and in close proximity to the Carlisle Airport. Beacon Management Associates will run the hotel in conjunction with Carlisle Investment Properties LLC.

According to township supervisor Tom Faley, the final land development plan for the hotel had been approved almost a year ago. At that point, the township had waived the requirement for a traffic study since they felt traffic was not likely to be an issue in that area, even with a new hotel.

The developer, however, did give the township a $20,000 donation for the township to use for any traffic study conducted within the municipality.

Because the hotel will not offer any dining services, the developer was required to install a sidewalk that would run from the hotel to the nearby Rite Aid, according to Faley. Normally, sidewalk requirements in the township are to have a width of 5 feet, but that was reduced to 3 feet to avoid right-of-way issues with private properties along the route.

When the hotel opens, Faley said it will be the first big hotel site in that area near the Carlisle Airport, which he estimated was about a half mile from the hotel.

There was initially some concern with the development of a hotel given its proximity to the airport, but the hotel was limited to three stories and the developer was required to install lights on the roof to make pilots aware of the structure.
