What bridge projects remain to be completed in Cumberland County’s Bridge Capital Improvement Program?

In 2014, Cumberland County began an ambitious $15 million project to repair its 28 county-owned bridges. Now, just nine bridge projects remain unfinished.

To call the county-owned bridges old would be an understatement. Many are over 100 years old, and the average age is nearly 80 years old, The Sentinel previously reported. Some bridges needed only minor repairs, but others needed their structures completely replaced.

The county has paid for the program in part by imposing a $5 annual vehicle registration fee, which generates $1.1 million annually for the bridge repairs. The county is considering borrowing $5 million in additional funds to complete the project by the end of 2021.

The following bridges are still awaiting the completion of improvements, according to the county’s website:

  • Green Lane Farm Bridge, Green Lane Drive over the Yellow Breeches Creek, Lower Allen Township; scheduled for completion in 2019.
  • Orr’s Bridge, Orr’s Bridge Road over the Conodoguinet Creek in Hampden Township; scheduled for completion in spring or summer 2020.
  • Ramp Bridge, Covered Bridge Road over the Conodoguinet Creek in Hopewell Township; scheduled for completion in 2019.
  • Hertzler Bridge, Creek Road over the Conodoguinet Creek, Lower Frankford Township; scheduled for completion in fall 2020.
  • Wolf Bridge, Wolfs Bridge Road over the Conodoguinet Creek, Middlesex Township; scheduled for completion in fall 2020.
  • Sample’s Bridge, Sample Bridge Road over the Conodoguinet Creek, Silver Spring Township; scheduled for completion in fall 2020.
  • Kunkle Bridge, Petersburg Road over the Yellow Breeches Creek, South Middleton Township; scheduled for completion in fall 2019.
  • Stonewall Bridge, Stonewall Road over Middle Spring Creek, Southampton Township; scheduled for completion in 2019.
  • Slate Hill Road Bridge, Slate Hill Road over the Yellow Breeches Creek, Lower Allen Township; scheduled for completion in fall 2020.
