Nanalee (Reider) Picou, age 83, passed from this life to the next on July 13, 2019 at Claremont Nursing Home, Carlisle, PA. Born Nov 7, 1935, she was the daughter of Harrison and Edna (Steigleman) Reider. Nanalee was the widow of her beloved Colonel Lloyd J. Picou who passed awa May 2004 after 33 years of marriage.
Nanalee attended Carlisle High School and worked as a switchboard operator for United Telephone Co. and later OPS-GROUP at the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle, where she met her husband on a football bet over a case of beer. (She won.)
Her parents, husband and step-son, David Picou, predeceased her.
She is survived by her sister, Jacqueline Handshew, Carlisle, PA; nephews, Richard Handshew, Carlisle, and Jamy (Pam) Handshew of Newville, PA and niece, Glenda (Garry) Stough, Mt. Holly Springs. Also surviving are step daughter-in-law Lin Picou of Land O’Lakes, FL and step-son, Michael Picou of Tallahassee, FL; and step-daughter, Denise LaBorde of Winter Park, FL. Nanalee also has 5 step-grandchildren and 9 step great-grandchildren and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
As a Colonel’s wife she faced many challenges with dignity and grace. She taught us to defy convention, only eat the good stuff you like, wear your diamonds, keep your hair appointments and love others by doing little things for them every day. She found the humor in everything, everyday.
She was always a great listener with a vivacious personality. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.
Per Nanlee’s wishes there will be no funeral service but cremation where she will be interred forever with her beloved Lloyd J. at Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens. Forever a staunch supporter of our troops, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516.
The family wishes to thank Claremont Nursing Home and Homeland Hospice for Nan’s end of life care.
