This week’s Tour Through Time takes a look at then and now images of Coyle Lumber & Millwork in South Middleton Township.

Coyle Lumber & Millworks is at 231 E. York Road, just outside Carlisle. The business originated in 1879, manufacturing solid wood architectural millwork.

According to the company website, Coyle Lumber Co. began in 1879 as a water-powered mill on the banks of the Yellow Breeches Creek. It was owned and operated by four generations of Coyle lumbermen for more than 100 years. The website says William “Bill” Coyle was the fourth and final generation of Coyles to own the business. He started after World War II and worked every day in the mill until his death in 1992. Ken Heiser purchased the business in 1998.

Tour Through Time will run Saturdays in The Sentinel as a joint project with the Cumberland County Historical Society. Sentinel photographers will work with staff at the Historical Society each week to offer a look at Carlisle and the surrounding area through the years.
