Capt. Miller

Among the Civil War memorabilia now on display at Cumberland County Historical Society, 21 N. Pitt St., Carlisle, is this portrait of Capt. William Miller, a native of West Pennsboro Township. Miller was awarded the Medal of Honor for a key attack at the Battle of Gettysburg. On July 3, 1863, he disobeyed orders to hold his position and led a charge by the 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry’s Co. H, made up primarily of Newville-area men, on the flank of Confederate Brig. Gen. Wade Hampden’s advancing forces. The local men’s attack threw the Rebels into disarray, helping win the day for the North.
