50 Years Ago

Mark N. Burkhart of South Bedford Street announced that he will retire effective Aug. 4 after 43 years in public education including 29 years as principal of Carlisle Senior High School. A 1929 graduate of Dickinson College, Burkhart started as a rural school teacher in West Pennsboro Township where he taught at Mt. Rock, a one-room school with eight grade levels. He then taught at Plainfield, a two-room school with four grades. From there, he taught math and science at the high school before being named assistant principal in 1938.
