It was announced that Gene Evans will return as head basketball coach of Carlisle High School. The Sentinel reported that Evans did not experience a losing season during his 10 years as coach of the Thundering Herd team. He guided Carlisle teams to District 3 Championships in 1959 and 1962 in addition to winning six South Penn League championships for a 170-53 overall record. In youth, Evans played four seasons of varsity basketball at Dickinson College, becoming co-captain of the Red Devils in 1949. He left Carlisle in 1962 to become the head basketball coach at Bucknell University. He later took a position at the University of Pennsylvania as an assistant football coach. Prior to Carlisle, Evans was a basketball coach in Hazleton where he guided a team to a 14-8 record. The gymnasium in the McGowan building is named after Evans.
