Citizens Fire Company No. 1 of Mount Holly Springs held a mortgage burning ceremony during its annual dinner on Feb. 18. The volunteer company had incurred about $20,000 in debt when it purchased in 1962 a former public school building on Chestnut Street from the Holly School District. “We feel that this is a day of victory and achievement and we are rejoicing in it,” then vice-president Glenn Laverty said during the ceremony. He said members gave untiringly of their time and efforts to liquidate the debt. The school was converted into the current fire station.
