The union representing Carlisle’s 100 teachers asked the local school board for salary increases to offset mounting wartime living costs. Lee Raffensperger, president of the Teachers Association, told board members many teachers will have to find work in other fields where the pay is higher or take part-time jobs to make ends meet. While board members agreed that current teacher salaries are not in keeping with rising costs, the pay hikes pushed by the teachers would require a hefty tax increase of about three mills, according to one estimate.
