75 Years Ago

A woman pilot named Evelyn G. Sharp died shortly before 11 a.m. after her P-38 fighter plane crashed on a Lower Allen Township farm a half-mile from the New Cumberland Army Depot airfield. Arthur Zimmerman, a farmer residing near the crash site, pulled her mangled body away from the aircraft after it burst into flames. Sharp, 23, was a pilot with the Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron.
