In an effort to dissuade drivers of overweight vehicles from continuing to use the historic stone arch bridge on Slate Hill Road, Lower Allen Township Police partnered with Mount Holly Springs Police for an enforcement detail Tuesday morning.
Township police said they cited the drivers of six vehicles in roughly the first two hours for overweight violations.
The posted limit on the bridge is 6,000 pounds, and police said the heaviest vehicle caught so far was in excess of 12,000 pounds.
Township police said they decided to hold the detail because the bridge has seen “much abuse over the years,” and it’s starting to show. Police said overweight vehicles have been using the road and the bridge as a shortcut.
Mount Holly Springs Police were involved because they have the vehicle scales that are provided by the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office.
