A Maryland man is in Franklin County Jail after a police pursuit Tuesday afternoon in Franklin County.
State Police at Chambersburg said Daimion Anthony Sweeney Jr., 24, of Largo, Maryland, was charged with fleeing police, DUI controlled substance, recklessly endangering another person and summary traffic offenses.
State Police at Carlisle had called the Chambersburg barracks for assistance at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday in locating a vehicle. Police said a man had attempted to get prescription medication using a fraudulent script at CVS in Shippensburg. The man led police on a brief pursuit before police discontinued the pursuit.
State Police at Chambersburg found the same vehicle traveling south on Interstate 81 in the area of mile marker 17. When the driver saw a marked patrol vehicle on the highway, he sped up and a pursuit ensued.
The vehicle fled south on I-81 at a high-rate of speed, traveling in and out of travel lanes and passing on the shoulder. Police discontinued the pursuit when they lost sight of the vehicle.
However, police said they again located the vehicle in Marion and re-initiated the pursuit. The vehicle fled south on Molly Pitcher Highway at a high speed and attempted to turn west onto Frank Road when it crashed, striking a stop sign and road sign and traveling down an embankment.
Police said two occupants of the vehicle fled and the vehicle caught fire.
Police located the two men and identified the driver as Sweeney. Police did not identify the passenger, pending an investigation.
Sweeney was charged and lodged in Franklin County Jail on $250,000 bail.
Sweeney also faces charges in Cumberland County from the earlier incident Tuesday. He was charged with felony forgery and misdemeanor theft by deception in Shippensburg.
