NORTH MIDDLETON TOWNSHIP — Crews were on the scene of a two-alarm barn fire for nearly eight hours overnight into Thursday morning.

Chief Shawn Brickner of the North Middleton Township Fire Department said his agency was dispatched around 11 p.m. Wednesday to the first block of Willow Grove Road, North Middleton Township, for what was originally called in as an outside investigation.

“Whoever called it in didn’t know what it was, they just saw a glow out in the darkness,” he said.

When crews arrived, they found the barn fully engulfed and called for more manpower.

“Our main priority was exposure protection for another building, and then we just went along with it with hand lines,” he said.

Brickner said crews were on scene until 7:30 a.m. Thursday morning cleaning up and taking care of hot spots.

The barn, which was a total loss, housed milking equipment, feed and straw but no livestock, Brickner said.

“The farmer was sleeping and he was awakened when somebody beat on his door and told him his barn was on fire,” he said.

No injuries were reported, but a firefighter was treated on scene for exhaustion, he said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Crews from Union, Carlisle Fire & Rescue Services, Mount Holly Springs, Carlisle Barracks, Upper Frankford, Hampden, South Newton, Penn, Newburg-Hopewell, Northeast Fire and Rescue, Shermans Dale, West Pennsboro and Washington assisted on the scene.
