In this 2015 file photo, shoppers visit a J.C. Penney store in New York.

The JCPenney store at the Capital City Mall in Lower Allen Township has been identified by a credit rating service as among those at risk of being closed.

JCPenney announced last month it would close 130 to 140 stores in the next couple of months because of slowing traffic and sales. The list was included in a story posted on

The department-store chain hasn’t yet released a list of which stores it will close, but Morningstar Credit Ratings has identified 39 stores most at risk of closing, based on the stores’ sales data. One of the stores included is the one at the Capital City Mall. Sears recently shut down its store at the Capital City Mall, which was then sold to Dick’s Sporting Goods.

The stores that made the list have weaker sales per square foot than JCPenney’s average. According to JCPenney, the stores most at risk of closing either require a significant capital investment or have below-average sales.
