The Cumberland Valley Rails-to-Trails Council will host a ribbon cutting ceremony Saturday to celebrate the completion and official opening of $1 million worth of trail projects on the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail.
The event will be held at 10 a.m. at Newville’s CVRTC trailhead, which features a parking lot at the intersection of Cherry and McFarland streets in Newville.
Following the ribbon-cutting, members of the CVRTC will lead a public hike on the trail corridor where the next two miles of trail will be developed in 2018. The path runs from Centerville Road to the Big Spring School District campus at Mt. Rock Road and then on to Green Hill Road.
Trail improvements recently completed include a 130-foot trail bridge over Big Spring Road; ½-mile of new trail from Big Spring Road to Centerville Road; and 160-foot trail underpass at Centerville Road.
The CVRT is 11 miles long, stretching from Newville to downtown Shippensburg. The 2018 extension will add another two miles as the trail moves closer to its goal: 20 miles of trail connecting Shippensburg and Carlisle.
