Parts of West Pomfret and South Pitt streets in Carlisle were closed to traffic Thursday evening as multiple fire crews from around the county battled a house fire.

First responders began arriving around 5:45 p.m. on Thursday for a fire that appeared to have started at the rear of a section of row homes on the west side of South Pitt Street, just north of Chapel Avenue.

Firefighters in respiratory gear were seen using power tools to cut into the upper floors of the homes, which were producing a thick, black smoke that created a haze around the neighborhood.

Fire damage was visible at the back of the structures, with crews operating out of a parking lot off Chapel Avenue pumping large volumes of water into the rear of the building and removing damaged pieces of roof.
