Carlisle named one of the best small towns in the United States

CARLISLE – Coming in between Montpelier, Vermont and Falls Church, Virginia, Carlisle has been named the 16th best small town in the United States, according to

Carlisle clocks in as the highest-ranking Pennsylvania town, beating out two other Midstate towns. Hershey is ranked No. 46 and Fredericksburg, Lebanon County rounds out the trio at 86.

According to the site, Carlisle is “nestled in the highly productive Cumberland Valley agricultural region” and “provides a quaint setting for families.”

This is the first year that Livability has expanded its annual 10 Best Small Towns to 100. The towns are judged on more numerous categories ranging from demographics, real estate and health care to social and civic capital.

Livabilty noted the “robust” educational institutions—including Carlisle Area School District, Dickinson College, Dickinson Law and the U.S. Army War College – the care provided at Carlisle Regional Medical Center and the abundance of public parks, restaurants and cultural attractions as points that catapult Carlisle to near the top of the list.

Civic engagement, most notably through public engagement in shaping the Carlisle Urban Redevelopment Plan, is also touted by the site.

“We govern ourselves, so there are quite a few opportunities here for people to volunteer on committees and commissions,” Borough Manager Matt Candland told
