An entire set of school supplies can cost as much as $300, and for some people that can be a big expense.

“They say education is the great equalizer, and it is, if you have the right tools,” said Bob Weed, CEO of Project Share.

Carlisle4Kids is a community backed effort to help all children in Carlisle get what they need to succeed in school. The group’s third annual event will be held Aug. 8 at the Carlisle Expo Center. Registration for the event is required by July 28.

Last year, around 720 children received supplies.

“It’s a great way to help our families’ children get started on the right foot — pun intended, because we provide sneakers,” Weed said.

The project is backed by several local organizations, among them Project Share and United Way of Carlisle and Cumberland County.

On Tuesday, members of the Carlisle 4 Kids Committee gathered at Hamilton Elementary School to kick off the school supplies drive. They taped signs to cardboard collection bins, which were donated by Carlisle Container Company. The collection bins will be placed in local churches and shops over the summer.

Carlisle4Kids seeks donations of backpacks and school supplies.

Also present on Tuesday was Judy Watkins of Dreyer Physical Therapy of Carlisle. At the Carlisle4Kids event, Dreyer will fit kids with backpacks.

“Kids like to wear backpacks with one strap, but we encourage kids to wear it with both straps so they don’t injure their shoulder,” Watkins said.
