Citizen Fire Company out of Mount Holly Springs battled a fire at the NRG turbine power generation plant in South Middleton Township Wednesday afternoon.

According to Fire Chief Tim Yingst, the fire occurred at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday at the power plant on Zion Road.

Yingst said the fire started in a turbine generator that produces power for the electrical grid when needed. The turbine is owned by NRG and monitored from the Hunterstown facility in Adams County, which called 911 when sensors and video alerted staff to a fire.

Yingst said the plant tank is supplied by 300,000 gallons of fuel oil and sits on top of a 1,700 gallon lube oil tank.

Facility personnel secured the power to the site, which allowed fire crews to battle the flames. There were no injuries in the incident, and the fire did not disturb the power grid.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the company.

Citizen was assisted by Carlisle Fire & Rescue and Yellow Breeches EMS.
