A state trooper shot and wounded a man during a traffic stop Friday morning on Interstate 83, police said.
Trooper Megan Frazer, a state police spokeswoman, said the man was aggressively following the trooper and then went around the police vehicle and abruptly stopped. The trooper initiated his emergency lights and pulled over the man at the Union Deposit Road exit around 9:30 a.m.
“At that point, the male subject abruptly got out of his vehicle armed with a machete. The actor failed to obey the trooper’s orders to drop the machete and advanced toward the trooper,” Frazer said. “The trooper then discharged his department-issued weapon and struck the actor multiple times.”
Police did not immediately release the man’s name because no charges have been filed yet.
He was transported by ambulance to Hershey Medical Center and is suspected of having nonlife-threatening injuries, Frazer said in a news release.
The trooper was not injured.
The Pennsylvania State Police Major Case Team is jointly investigating the shooting with the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office Criminal Investigation Division. The trooper has been placed on administrative duty pending a prosecutorial determination by the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office.
Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo said the machete was eight to nine inches long and two or three inches wide, or more. He said it appears the man was attempting to initiate a violent confrontation.
“Preliminarily, that would justify the use of deadly force, but we’re going to examine that fully and come up with a final determination,” Chardo said.
The incident closed a two-mile section of I-83 northbound between Exit 46-A in the Eisenhower Interchange and Exit 48 for Union Deposit Road until shortly before 2 p.m.
