HS Swimming Previews: Big Spring's Shannon McCabe

Big Spring’s Shannon McCabe joined teammate Dillon Novak last year to become the first Bulldogs pair, boys and girls, to ever combine for PIAA gold, silver or bronze. McCabe is back after winning silver in districts and states.

Big Spring Bulldogs

Breakdown: The Bulldogs return a solid core that’s led by senior diver Shannon McCabe. She placed second at both the District 3 and the PIAA Championships last season. Sophomore Alicia Canady joined her on the district medal stand, taking fourth. A strong crop of juniors including Chloe White, Erin Brandenburg, Lauren Shank and Ella Pagel will give the Bulldogs some point-scoring ability and will be contenders for the district podium.

Boiling Springs Bubblers

Coach: Matt Brenner

Classification: 3A

Last year: 8-3 (3-2)

Postseason: 10th in District 3 Class 2A Championships.

Opener: Saturday at Dover Tournament, 9 a.m.

Breakdown: The always-competitive Bubblers will be in the mix again this season, though this year’s edition will have to make up for a few key graduation losses. Seniors Chloe Eltringham and Bri Progar and junior Maggie Biss all bring District 3 experience, with all three of them having qualified in individual events last season. Biss and Progar were part of a 200 medley relay squad that took eighth.

East Pennsboro Panthers

Coach: Shannon Milstead and Kristyn Gross

Classification: 2A

Last year: 1-6 (0-5)

Postseason: 17th in District 3 Class 2A Championships.

Key returners: Rachel Rineer, sr.; Jackie Karoly, so.; Anna Kauffman, sr.

Opener: Dec. 14 with Harrisburg Academy, Northern at Cumberland Valley, 4:30

Breakdown: The Panthers have decent numbers, and they bring back a handful of swimmers who picked up some postseason experience last year. Sophomore Jackie Karoly and senior Rachel Rineer were part of a 200 free relay squad that qualified for districts.

Northern Polar Bears

Coach: Bill Resser

Classification: 2A

Last year: 7-5 (5-1)

Postseason: Tied 3rd in District 3 Class 2A Championships; 20th in PIAA Class 2A Championships.

Key returners: Morgan Starliper, sr.; Nicole Andrews, jr.; Katelyn Boyce, jr.; Lauren Eby, jr.; Kate Luft, jr.; Mary Secord, jr.

Opener: Tuesday at Central York, 4:30

Breakdown: The bad news for the Polar Bears is that graduation cost them three district medalists. The good news is that there is still enough talent for the Bears to contend in a strong Colonial Division. Junior Kate Luft was a district champ in the 200 IM and a district and state silver medalist in the 100 back. Fellow junior Nicole Andrews claimed a district medal in the 100 breast and was part of two medal-winning relay squads.

Shippensburg Greyhounds

Coach: Jeff Kaminski

Classification: 2A

Last year: 11-0 (6-0)

Postseason: 7th in District 3 Class 2A Championships.

Key returners: Madison Osanitsch, so.; Makenna Morris, so.; Madelyn Facchinei, jr.; Jordan Seymore, jr.; Jadyn Glunt, jr.

Opener: Tuesday vs. Trinity, 4:30

Breakdown: The Greyhounds powered to a division title last season thanks to an effective mix of senior leaders and talented underclassmen, and they hope to repeat the feat again this season. They have plenty back, including in the relays. Madison Osanitsch and Makenna Morris had standout freshman campaigns, with both swimmers registering top-five individual finishes at districts. Junior Madelyn Facchinei claimed a district medal in the 100 breast.

Trinity Shamrocks

Coach: Michael MacDonald

Classification: 2A

Last year: 5-5 (1-4)

Postseason: 5th in District 3 Class 2A Championships; 27th in PIAA Class 2A Championships.

Key returners: Sarah Wyant, sr.; Mimi Chase, sr.; Alexis Majka, jr.; Laura Weiss, sr.; Stella Baron, so.; Elise Shore, so.; Nicole Lee, jr.

Opener: Tuesday at Shippensburg, 4:30

Breakdown: Trinity nabbed a fifth-place team finish at last year’s District 3 Championships, and underclassmen were responsible for a lot of those points. Sarah Wyant is a state medalist in the 100 free and a district runner-up in the 50 free, and Mimi Chase nabbed a pair of individual medals at the district meet. The 'Rocks can also run out a strong and experienced group in the relays.
