Penn State football enters the season ranked No. 6 in the USA Today/Amway Coaches Poll, which was announced Thursday. This is the first time the Nittany Lions have been ranked since the 2011 season, with the highest being in 1999 (third).

Penn State comes off an 11-3 season that included a fourth Big Ten Championship and first Rose Bowl appearance since 2009 and return 45 lettermen and 18 starters from last year’s Big Ten Championship squad. Those players include Saquon Barkley, who earned All-America honors, Trace McSorley, Mike Gesicki, Jason Cabinda, Marcus Allen, Grant Haley and Tyler Davis.

Head coach James Franklin was also named the Sporting News National Coach of the Year for last season's efforts.
