HARTFORD, Conn. — The Hartford Yard Goats downed the Harrisburg Senators 5-1 Saturday night at Dunkin’ Donuts Park. The Senators brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but were unable to overcome the deficit as they suffered their first series loss of the season.
The Yard Goats struck for two early runs in the first against Senators starter Wirkin Estevez. After the first two batters reached, Brendan Rodgers singled in the first run and one batter later, Brian Mundell hit a run-scoring ground out to second to make it 2-0 Hartford.
Dom Nunez doubled the lead in the fourth with a two-run home run to put Hartford up 4-0.
The Yard Goats finished their scoring in the seventh when Omar Carrizales hit a pinch-hit solo home run.
Hartford starter Peter Lambert (1-1) tossed seven shutout innings and limited the Senators to just six hits while striking out eight and not walking a batter.
Estevez (0-2) took the loss after surrendering four runs on seven hits while striking out seven in five and a third innings.
The Senators got on the board with a run in the eighth against reliever Jason Garcia. Pinch-hitter Stephen Perez singled and took second on a wild pitch to start the frame. The next batter, Daniel Johnson, reached on an infield single on a groundball to second baseman Garrett Hampson, who threw the ball past first baseman Brian Mundell which allowed Perez to come all the way around to score. Later in the inning, the club loaded the bases two outs but were unable to plate another run.
The Senators loaded the bases again in the ninth, but Matt Pierpont struck out Jacob Wilson to seal the 5-1 win and notch his 5th save.
Johnson and Taylor Gushue each finished with a pair of hits to pace the Senators.
