BOWIE, MD — The Harrisburg Senators dropped the series finale to the Bowie Baysox 6-4 as they split the four game season opening set. The Senators rallied for three runs in the ninth but were unable to complete the comeback as they stranded the possible tying run at second base.
The Baysox jumped to an early lead with a four-run second inning that featured a pair of bases loaded walks and two run-scoring ground outs against Senators starter Luis Reyes.
Osvaldo Abreu put the Senators on the board with a solo home run to left center in the second off Baysox starter Christian Binford to make it a 4-1 game.
That was all that Binford (1-0) would allow across 6 innings, along with five hits and a walk.
Bowie added a run in the fourth on three hits including an RBI single by Corban Joseph and plated their final run in the sixth on a Cedric Mullins home run to expand the lead to 6-1.
Reyes (0-1) surrendered five runs on six hits across his four innings.
With Bowie still in front 6-1 in the top of the ninth, the Senators mounted a comeback. After Taylor Gushue and Dan Gamache singled and Yadiel Hernandez walked to load the bases, Abreu singled in his second run of the game to make it 6-2. One batter later, Rafael Bautista singled in another pair of runs to cut the deficit to 6-4. The next batter, Daniel Johnson, singled to load the bases and put the tying run on second, but Baysox reliever Luis Gonzalez struck out Jacob Wilson in a 10-pitch at bat to seal the 6-4 win and earn his first save.
Abreu, Wilson, Gamache and Johnson each finished with a pair of hits and both Wilson and Gamache have recorded at least one hit in all four games this season. Abreu’s two RBI also led the way for the Senators.
