HERSHEY — Kollin Myers stared down Ty Claycomb in the 145-pound bout. He wanted the pin and he wanted it bad.
Boiling Springs trailed behind Chestnut Ridge 27-21 in the PIAA Class 2A Wrestling Team Championships quarterfinals at Giant Center on Friday. Myers kept up the intensity the entire match, knocking Claycomb to his back more than once and putting everyone on the edge of their seats.
Blood time extended the duration of the match, and with his entire face covered in bandages to stop a bloody nose, Myers took Claycomb to his back again in the second period, finally forcing a pin in 2:41 and tying the team score 27-27.
The celebration the Boiling Springs entire bench had was short-lived.
With two bouts remaining, the Bubblers just couldn't keep up the pace with Lions as they lost the last two bouts and were handed a 35-27 loss, dropping them down into the second round of the consolation bracket.
"We lost the coin toss and that was a tall order for us," Bubblers head coach Rodney Wright said. "I knew it was going to be real difficult, but we ran it right to the end. I'm happy for the team, they were just better than us today."
The Bubblers started off slow at 170 with Zach Martin falling to a 27-12 technical fall right out of the gate. Nick Kostyak at 182 lost a 3-2 decision and Colby Tennyson was pinned in 1:31 at 195.
Boiling Springs found itself in a 14-0 hole and had to claw its way back out.
Austin Taylor got the Bubblers on the board at 220 with a pin on Duane Knisely in 1:49, and Damon James added points with a 4-1 decision over Dalton Seace at 285.
Later, down 27-9, Collin Nester got things rolling for the Bubblers at 126 with a pin in just 40 seconds. Jack Coulston (132) and Lucas Shoop (138) each set up Myers to tie it with his own pin to make it 27-21.
The Myers bout was big for the Bubblers, but the final two matches told the tale. Weaknesses showed through and Boiling Springs ultimately fell.
"We'll try and win a couple more matches here and see where we stand," Wright said. "It didn't start out very pretty, but we chipped our way back."
The Bubblers will wrestle Westmont Hilltop in the consolations starting at 4.
