I think my entire team had been thinking about districts for a long time and this weekend gave us the chance to finally see what we are capable of as a group.
My confidence in the team gradually built throughout the season, but I still had no idea if we would be able to make it to states. I assumed it would be close. However, I did not realize just how close it would be. We ended up getting fourth by two points. The top four teams go to states.
I felt both relieved and excited when I heard this news and I am so proud of everyone on my team. I was also shocked by how close we were to not going. A two point difference means that if any of our runners dropped more than two places in a race of over 200 kids, we would not have qualified.
Winning districts as an individual was also exciting. Ever since my freshman year I wanted to become district champion by the end of high school, and accomplishing this goal I’ve had for so long felt great. Nevertheless, I was not entirely satisfied with my race and the one that matters most to me is next weekend.
