Throughout the 2017-18 high school sports season, we will name a weekly Sentinel Athlete of the Week every Monday night highlighting the on-field performances of some of the area’s best high school competitors.

This week’s athlete is Carlisle football senior Gavyn Barnes. In a game that wasn’t supposed to favor Carlisle, the Thundering Herd shut down the nay-sayers by blowing by Susquehanna Twp. in a 36-28 home win Friday night.

Barnes was a big reason the Herd got the win. In the first half, Barnes had two rushing touchdowns and a scoring toss in his first time at the QB position. He finished 7-of-20 for 113 yards and added in a game-high 118 yards on 21 carries.

Q: When was the last time you played quarterback at any level?

A: The last time I played quarterback was playing on the freshman football team when I was in the eighth grade.

Q: What was the first thing you thought when you got word you would be in that spot Friday night against Susquehanna Twp.?

A: My first thought was that maybe this could be best and that I had come into the game ready to do whatever it takes to get the win!

Q: What was it like going out there and surprising them with you being at QB and getting the win?

A: It was exciting. I looked forward into getting to play QB again and, when we won, it felt so much better to know that I did what was best to help the team come out on top.

Q: Would you want to play QB again, or would you rather stick to another position?

A: I would play whatever position a coach wants if it would be best for the team and help us come out on top.

Q: Are there any NFL players you model your style of play after?

A: The players I would model my play after would have to be Odell Beckham Jr. and Tavon Austin.

Q: Are there any professional athletes that you look up to as a role model?

A: My role model is Tavon Austin.

Q: Do you have any hobbies outside of football?

A: My main hobbies would have to be listening to music, drawing and playing basketball.

Q: If you could have any job in the world, what would it be and why?

A: I would play in the NFL — that’s all I ever wanted to do!

Q: Who inspires you the most in life?

A: My mom inspires me the most.

Q: Is there any quote or saying that you live by?

A: “Sometimes in life, the only choice one has is to how they respond.” ~ Deion Sanders
