Nine teams participated in the eighth annual “Spill the Beans” bean soup cookoff Saturday at Shippensburg University. More than 100 people paid to sample the recipes and determine the winners.
The event was sponsored by Downtown Organizations Investing Together, and proceeds benefited the Boys and Girls Club of Shippensburg.
Three of the nine teams were in the business division. The winner, Gannon Associates, will have the traveling trophy on display for the next year.
Thelma Dickerson and St. Peter’s AME Church won the first-place prize of $500 among the five entrants in the nonprofit and individual division. Second place of $250 went to the Shippensburg Area Education Association, and Lakisha and the Lord’s Angels placed third and won $100.
SAEA was also the People’s Choice winner.
The first- and second-place teams both donated their prize money to other organizations. Dickerson gave her winnings to her church for operating expenses, and SAEA donated their prize money to the Shippensburg Public Library.
Event sponsors were: Shippensburg Pump Co. Inc. and American Legion Post 223, Platinum sponsors with $2,000 each; Beidel Printing House Inc. and Valley Heating & Cooling, Gold, $1,000; Orrstown Bank, University Relations and Sheetz, Silver, $750; Durff-Kuhn VFW Post 6168 and CVR Rental/Town Cleaners and members, Bronze, $300; and Boyer & Ritter, Patron, $50.
